THE DISAPPEARED ROMAN STREET OF TREVISO
THE DISAPPEARED ROMAN STREET OF TREVISO
Once upon a time there was a tiny village called Treviso and it was such a lovely and wealthy one that even Romans understood its importance, insofar they decided to conquer Treviso and leave in it strong prints of their passage.
As all of the Roman cities, even Treviso has got a particular plant, with 2 main streets called Cardo and Decumanus, 2 latin words respectively indicating (‘cardo’) a narrower street running from north to south, while the latter (‘decumanus’) is wider and runs from east to west.
Romans set here a whole town and they stayed in Treviso for a long time and so they left here many proofs.
We are speaking about a whole roman-style town which lasted for centuries, lasted even to Attila and to barbaric invasion, lasted with this features until a complete renovation during the medieval period happened.
At that point, many proofs of memories started to be moved, to be buried, to be forgotten… until last century (XXth) when a big mosaic has been rediscovered, as well as few houses and a well, and many friezes in different shapes and sizes mounted here and there in many other historical buildings.
But it seemed that the 2 main streets were complete disappeared, because not a single stone was visible.
As a legend, a word of mouth, a gossip, everybody in town knew that the main modern street in Treviso, called Calmaggiore, was set exactly over the ancient Cardo but nothing else. A gallery in that area has been entitled “Galleria della strada romana” (Gallery of roman street) but no proof of the roman street.
Rumors says that the only one entrance to the ruins is from a store in the gallery…. just rumors? Nobody knows it, and nobody is able to see the ruins.
The roman street is definitely disappeared!
But… (all the fairy tale has got a happy end!!) last spring a new and different store in town finally open (better, open wide) the door to the ruins!!!
The roman street is there! It’s finally visible, available, visitable…. and it’s magnificent!
It’s just a portion of that famous Cardo made by Romans, it’s built perfectly according to the typical construction rules of that time and it’s totally amazing!!
Roman street of Treviso is waiting for you! Yes, exactly you!
The street is proud to be visited, pictured, acclaimed, applause, admired.
Take your chance, don’t miss this opportunity! We see each other in Treviso!
